Chapter Thirteen

I stared at my boss’s—and boyfriend’s!—amused face, stunned and a bit embarrassed for attacking him. “What are you doing here?” I scrambled up and offered him a hand. He took it, though he didn’t need it for getting up.

Luca was still laughing. The bastard could’ve stopped me before I reached Kane. He certainly had the speed for it.

Kane smiled as he dusted wet leaves that had clung to him from his clothes. “The same as you, I’d venture.”

“But … how?”

He wrapped an arm around me and gave me a brief hug. He didn’t seem to hold my tackle against me.

“I couldn’t sleep for some reason,” he said, eyes twinkling at me. “So I went for a jog. I don’t know why I decided to run here, but as I reached the house I felt my wards being tampered with, so I came to check.”

“You’ve put your own wards around the house?” I asked. I wasn’t surprised that he’d jogged eight kilometres through Central London in the middle of the night. The wards shouldn’t have surprised me either. Rupert was getting old for such a straining task.

“I did after Blackhart’s attack. So what drew you here?”

We told him about the client and following the car. He furrowed his brows. “I don’t like that so many people are after the book.”

“Maybe the client is with the mage who broke into the shop,” Luca pointed out. “I’ll only have to get a good scent.”

“Are they still here?” I asked, glancing around, as if I could see in the dark.

Kane shook his head. “I don’t know, but no one’s trying to take down the wards anymore.”

“I’ll go check,” Luca said, disappearing into the darkness. Kane and I walked back to the street hand in hand. I hadn’t even notice him take it, and it made my heart beat faster like a schoolgirl with her first crush. For a man who’d always been so proper with his conduct, he showed affection with ease.

We paused under the trees across the street. I glanced around, but we were alone. If the mage was still here, he was on the other side of the house.

“I’m sorry I tackled you.”

He grinned. “No harm done. The lawn was soft. And it’s not every day a hot woman lands on me.”

“Better not be…”

His grin turned teasing. “We need to work on your levitation spell a bit though. You should’ve been able to lift me with it.”

“I can’t even lift a pen properly,” I said miserably. “I’ll fail the council presentation.”

He pulled me into a hug, his arms around me, and cheek pressed on my head. “It’s not a serious event. They simply want to know you’re a real mage and not a trickster.”

I hoped he was right.

Luca took some time to return. “There definitely had been two people sniffing around the house. I followed the scent, but they got into a car before I reached them.”

“Was one of them the mage who broke into the antiques shop?”

“No.”

Bugger. “It would be so much simpler if we had only one mage to deal with.
